We will provide academic staff and organisational & policymaking staff with more clarity about career paths, employment relationships, remuneration, PhD opportunities and promotions. We will substantially reduce the percentage of lecturers on temporary contracts and will aim for more permanent contracts.

The Covid pandemic has had a considerable impact on academics’ work and well-being. They have had much less time to spend on their research. The Young Academy and the Dutch Network of Women Professors have conducted research into how the situation has been for academics. The two organisations have recommendations on how to mitigate potential adverse effects of the pandemic.

Statement by the Executive Board regarding permanent and long-term contracts for lecturers

In our new Strategic Plan, we indicate how we will give shape to good employment practice in the years ahead. Topics such as ‘social safety’, the staff workload and personal development are important in this respect. One aspect of good employment practice is providing permanent contracts for structural work, long-term contracts for temporary employment and greater clarity about development options and career paths.

Good lecturers are extremely important to our university. I therefore think it is crucial that we provide them with enough professional development opportunities. The Lecturer Development Taskforce has issued concrete recommendations on how to improve this. As the Board we welcome this advice.

Taskforce calls for more scope for lecturer development: ‘Dare to raise the issue yourself’

The quality of academic education depends on good teaching. A taskforce of lecturers, education specialists and HRM experts is therefore calling for Leiden lecturers to be given more opportunities and scope to develop their talents. The group hopes that, with a new lecturer development model and concrete recommendations, teaching and learning can be brought closer together. The Executive Board welcomes the advice from the taskforce.
