Reducing pressure to apply for research funding

Applying for research funding takes a great deal of time and energy, which cannot be used for research, teaching or knowledge utilisation. We will therefore intensify our Leiden Research Support Network, aiming for better coordination, organisation and support in preparing research proposals.

The academic playing field is becoming more complex all the time, making a strong research support network crucial. Over 100 research support professionals shared knowledge, gained inspiration and became acquainted or got to know each other even better at the third Leiden Research Support Conference at PLNT.

The rules of play for researchers are becoming increasingly complex. This makes it essential that they receive the best possible support with challenges such as complicated grant procedures or strict privacy and ethics requirements. Leiden’s research support professionals have a network in which they share their knowledge and experience. ‘Then you can provide the best possible support without having to reinvent the wheel each time,’ says community manager Manon Osseweijer.

Giving lectures, marking exams, essays or theses, supervising students and PhDs, doing research and, as if that wasn’t enough, also trying to raise the necessary funding. There is a limited number of funds for academic research and a large number of applications. Many of our researchers therefore experience great pressure applying for these grants because much depends on it. But things could be done differently. In a letter to the House of Representatives last week, Minister Dijkgraaf wrote that he wanted to work towards continuous working capital for researchers.
